There was a Wellness Fair in the main gym at Bremen High School on February 22, 2024. This fair was called the Health & Prosperity Fair. There were tables set up with many unique services to students. Many students went to enjoy the fair and it seemed like it was an overall positive experience for all who attended. “It was fun and very interesting at the fair!” stated Jose Velazquez, Freshman.
One table that was present was the Family Services table. There were nurses available to talk with students about various topics. They talked with students about how there are many fields to get involved with with this type of job. Some of the fields to work in are family counseling and DCFS. The people at the table discussed how to get into this type of career.
Another table was the Crisis Center table. This table preached what Bremen tells students to do: “If you see something, say something!” The people at this table educated students to be aware that there are a lot of people who go through trauma. It is important for all to be aware of what happens as not a lot of people can see what others are going through. Students were told to look for signs and cues because many people become involved with abuse and even sex trafficking but others don’t even realize it is happening.
The Cullinary Arts table was a big hit as there were many people visiting this area regularly. They served food that many found to be delightful. There were yogurt with blueberries or strawberries available. In addition, student were able to add any kind of granola. On top of that, cinnamon and honey could be added too. It was evident that lot of people loved being able to have this sweet treat.
The longest line could be found at the table where you could make an “Stress Relief” craft. This table appeared to be the most popular. Students were directed to fill a bottle with water. Students could then put glitter in the bottle of water and cap it. In addition to this, they could decorate the bottle. After students made the craft they carried it around with them tipping it up and down to see the pretty glitter travel through the water. This craft was made so people could fidget with it and relieve stress.
It was also nice to see many people at the Breast Cancer table learning all about the disease. The educators talked to students about Breast Cancer: “Breast cancer victims are predominantly African American,” explained the volunteer at the table. They talked to people about how it is important to pay attention to any changes with the breast; “it is so important to pay attention to lumps or hard areas,” the lady explained.
Students really seemed to enjoy themselves at the entire event. They were happy spending time with friends, but they also took a lot away from what they saw at the tables. “The Health Fair was fun; the activities were cool to see and I got to learn new things,” said Ella Conlan, Freshman at BHS.
There were many give-aways including pens, squishies and informational pamphlets. Many students loved that some vendors gave bags (with the names on them to promote the group) that they could carry their items in.
This fair is an annual event at Bremen High School and is hosted by the Diversity Club. There were over 45 vendors and it seems that everyone who attended and had a chance to walk through rows of tables to learn more about different areas of Wellness; it was evident that all truly had an amazing time.
