One reason to consider joining Mathletes is to get better at math; many who join are already good at math. In Mathletes at BHS, club members participate in competitions against other schools and have weekly practices.
The freshmen meet in room 141 for practice with their advisor, Mr. Flood, different age levels will have different advisors. The team actually practices math before competing. It is important to get the practice in. Students are given worksheets; they get time to and you work them out with a partner or group. At practice, Mathletes members go over math topics that will help them during the competitions. Practice usually consists of students going over topics as a class or in small groups.
Many people join this club for various reasons. “My sister had told me about this club and she made me want to join; also, I just did it for fun” exclaimed Bianca Cisneros, BHS Mathletes member.
The participants in this club are students who want to improve their skills in math and students who are good at math already. The benefits of being in Mathletes include improving at math, making friends, and being awarded at competitions.
Mathletes compete at 5 different schools including Bremen for a total of 5 competitions. Each competition there is food such as pizza, cookies, and brownies. Mathletes take place on Tuesdays for practice and Wednesday on competitions. The freshman coach for Mathletes is Mr. Flood. Where you meet varies on what year you’re in. At the competitions, there are two solo tests, and one group test at the competition. During the solo test, up to 6 people can take the test, but for the group test only 5 can participate. The competitions are very organized. Students know that they will get worksheets and have 15 minutes to complete them. Students also know that awards are given to the winners.
There are so many reasons to join. “You should join because you get to test your knowledge and get free food!” exclaimed Cisneros. It seems that all who are involved really do enjoy being part of the club. Mathletes is a lot of fun for students; it is also a great opportunity to challenge yourself.
This year’s club members are great at working as a team. “In the conference meet, we received 2 second place ribbons and 1 third place ribbon!” said Cisneros.
Mathletes is a great opportunity! More people should consider joining. “I would definitely recommend others to join!” explain Cisneros.
